Lifetime Activities
Course Description: This is an introduction to secondary physical education with an emphasis on providing the students with knowledge and skills necessary to develop and participate in lifetime fitness activities. There is a balance of activities throughout the year between sports that emphasize teamwork and activities like jogging, strength training, endurance, and stretching that will be individually useful and enjoyable throughout the students’ lives. Also, as a requirement of the International Baccalaureate Organization, Middle Years Programme, this course will be taught in conjunction with other subject areas as necessary. Students will also explore the content and concepts of Lifetime Activities through the Areas of Interaction which will deepen understanding, increase retention and improve the student’s ability to apply this learning to other subject areas.

Team Sports

Unified Sports
Course Description: Regular education students work one on one with the special education students who are training for unified sports teams in Special Olympics. Students assist in instruction of skills in volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, and track and field for competition. Class size is limited. Permission from the instructor is required.

Bodyworks
Course Description: This course is designed for the student who wants to learn about the importance of exercise for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Bodyworks engages students in activities related to physical fitness with emphasis on cardiovascular development, building muscular strength and endurance, increasing flexibility, and improving body composition to enhance overall wellness. Components of health (such as nutrition and stress management) are also studies. Exercises incorporated in the class include Yoga, Kickboxing, Aerobic Dance, Circuit Training, Power Walking, Jogging, Stretching, and use of the fitness equipment inside the Sound Body Sound Mind Fitness Center.

There is a balance of activities throughout the year between weight training activities and jogging, endurance, and stretching exercise that can become individually useful and enjoyable throughout the students’ lives.

Varsity Fitness
Course Description: This is an introductory weight training/conditioning class with an emphasis on providing the students with knowledge and skills necessary to develop and participate in lifetime fitness activities. This class is designed for those students competing in varsity level athletic programs at JFK. There is a balance of activities throughout the year including strength training, cardiovascular endurance, agility, flexibility and other activities which are beneficial to those students who are participating in varsity sports.
